Roanoke’s Chapter 285 was recently named the 2019 Medium Sized Chapter of the Year for the Air Force Association.  The National Awards Committee made the announcement after their selection meeting on 17 June.  The award will be presented at the AFA National Convention in September.
Chapter president Robin Thompson expressed her gratitude for all the chapter members who contributed to the attainment of this award.  Highlighted in the nomination package were the chapter’s involvement with community relations, aerospace education, overall chapter programming, support of the Virginia AF JROTC annual drill meet, and ongoing efforts to keep our members informed about local events and national security issues.  Among other things, the chapter supports the Virginia Museum of Transportation through ongoing aerospace education grants, co-sponsor the Spartan Robotics Team from Salem High School, provided a grant for the Danville VA Civil Air Patrol to purchase drones for their aerospace education program, and routinely provides first-class speakers at our quarterly chapter meetings.

This is the third time the chapter has won this award.  We were previously selected in 2005 and 2009.
